That's...brilliant. Evil, but brilliant.

comment I've inherited a rat's nest of cabling. What now?
@iconoclast that is a very good point. I had assumed this was an office-setting where after hours downtime would be fine.

does it work? i mean, does it do what you wish it to do? is the only problem the fact that it closes?

comment bash + print line every 10 min in bash
+1 this is what i would have suggested. take loop until counter is 600, then echo thing and reset counter to 0. however, from faker's answer, i realize mod is much more elegant and efficient

comment What does “random seek time” really means in HDD benchmarks?
I think what SvenW is saying, is that it gets a head start on the requests, and constantly then goes to the next closest sector of the ones it has already been fed. @DavidSchwartz, imagine in your example, that the store names were given one at a time. In such a case, you'd only have a few to look at, and thus would have to pick the order based on a slowly growing pool.

comment Can Exchange be configured to populate a text/plain part of a meeting invite?
this. Native exchange doesn't have any in-built support for changing outgoing messages. third-party (proprietary) tools exist, but with native exchange all you can do is append a disclaimer

comment Ubuntu: remotely disable upgrade?
am i the only one who thinks that is incredibly unclear? "never prompt" sounds like it'll never ask if you want to update or not.

huh. looks like you found the answer on your own. the google-fu is somewhat strong (if slow to appear) in this one. also, i prefer to just calc it in my head. it's only 3 bits after all.

:tips hat: i'm not sure that the leading dash does (the dash before the first 'rw-' group) so i'm not sure how it factors into the numeric representation. sorry.

comment Windows 7 Screen Saver timeout problems using GPO
are the units not funcioning correctly (with the screensavers i mean) on the same version of windows as the others? it could be that the names of those flags are different in different versions (proffessional, enterprise, ultimate, etc) or in different update states (sp1, etc). unlikely, yes, but still a possibility.

Still though, if you have a direct contact for them (an account manager or someone NOT in support) i would tell them that this has made you question your choice in doing business with them. That is a level of unprofessionalism that's disgusting. It is the support person's JOB to do the googleing, or to pass the call on to someone who knows more.
