thanks! Unfortunately "early on" is long gone. While I know that some ldap/kerberos configuration is something I'd like to include here where I work, but that wouldn't be now. For some other reasons I was specifically interested in the use of UID/GID across interoperating systems. Like I said file-transferring is one issue (which currently has a "it works" status), that was why I wanted to know if there are other things (as you mentioned) also affected by UIDs. Could you add some keywords of those "other scenarios"? That would make this a splendid answer!
