Thanks for your answer. To be clear the Azure guy was saying their virtualisation layer had 3-4x times the IO to SQL server than the rackspace vmware layer due to some 'tuning' they had done.

That's right Craig. And perhaps that doesn't then give me the same ability to scale out. I'm keen to have a dedicated/non-shared machine for our database server.

accepted When I do a full nmap portscan on my rackspace server I find port 1984 open - “BigBrother”. Is this ok?
