comment What advantages does mod_evasive have over mod_security2 in terms of DDOS protection?
Have a look at serverfault.com/questions/531941/i-am-under-ddos-what-can-i-do to learn a bit about DDoS attacks. That will help you understand how (in)effective a software firewall can be.

I would like to let you know that this solution worked perfectly (in combination with CloudFlare of course). No more downtime. Thank you!

haha there is no such thing as "really cheap fiber connection" here in Spain :P And all DDoS protected servers are far above my budget. But you have given me enough info to continue this fight. Thank you very much, I will accept the answer as soon as I test it.

I will use this guide: howtoforge.com/postfix_relaying_through_another_mailserver to send the emails to the secondary server, and then remove the mail's "history" as you have explained. And I can't do anything else, if this solution doesn't work, I will have to disconnect my server forever.

thanks for the answer, sounds easy hehe. Regarding your comment about security, CloudFlare will take care of attacks and link saturation.

@JennyD The server is hosting a forum. I just send emails on user registration, private messages and stuff like that. So, if I can't send emails hiding the IP, well, lets send emails from a secondary server, how can I do that?

well, you were right! The eth link up was caused by the driver (and the attacks of course), and seems to be solved since I upgraded ubuntu. Now there is no need to restart after attacks.

/etc/sysctl.conf edited (this guide also helped: linuxstuffs.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/drop-syncddos-attack) but I'm being attacked again. internal/external DNS? I don't know, I will check my bind config files, but I haven't changed anything there.
