comment puppet cert mismatch in ec2
Thank you! You saved me heaps of time (apparently this bug still exists as of 3.1.0 on CentOS 5 -- I'll have to figure out how to reopen the bug on PuppetLabs' bugtracker)

comment sync chunk of log changes to a new file on a different machine (real-time)
If you need "real-time" analysis, why not pipe directly into your analysis platform (either via UDP or Unix pipes?) - makes more sense than buffering through an extraneous file.

You may want to pipe {{nc -ul <port>}} through logrotate, or else redirect to an output file. Be careful with netcat and UDP though, it's a little tricky to get it to work: stackoverflow.com/questions/7696862/…

comment trouble backing up large mysql database
That's not actually correct: -q (short for --quick) tells the client not to buffer the response, which for large dumps is definitely recommended but has nothing to do with table locks.

comment Is there a way to create a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror across multiple volumes?
That's an interesting idea - hadn't thought of that - but unfortunately yes, these snapshots need to be triggered manually (since we migrate production data to a test environment, all data generated after the snapshot is deleted on the next resync. We have to consider this every time we sync, hence the manual trigger). You did give me the idea to rewrite the scheduler to, say, 10 minutes hence, wait for the process to complete and then disable it. I wonder how hard this would be to script...

comment Alternative Remote Desktop Software
Unfortunately, mRemote was merged with a commercial (if potentially impressive) product, so it's no longer open source and will not be updated further.

The question is not clear -- what's "wrong" with CC.NET? What goals are you trying to achieve?
