comment How can I sort du -h output by size
If using on OSX via Homebrew, note that you'll now need to use gsort rather than sort: du -hs * | gsort -h

comment Install the latest boost centos 5.5
Also be warned that installing Boost through yum will not provide the latest version of Boost as posed in the original question. Also, Boost uses bjam install, not ./configure && make && sudo make install.

comment Can you rely on Nginx as your only webserver for php/mysql
The following guide helped me move off Apache + mod_php towards a complete nginx + php-fpm (fastcgi) setup, providing huge performance boosts for the 30+ sites I run on my server. This guide does not use the stock PHP-CGI binary, but explains why, and the PHP-FPM code that it patches into the PHP source is actually going to be part of the official PHP core going forward. Takes some patience and some time to get running but runs extremely well, for me anyway. Will depend a lot on your applications and the server. The guide: interfacelab.com/nginx-php-fpm-apc-awesome

Disregard that; I failed to mention in my original post that I was using a fallback smarthost. After changing it from a fallback to a normal smarthost in the configuration, messages are successfully queued then delivered after the next hop server comes back online.

That being said, thanks for the suggestion, however tweaking those does not solve the problem. After tweaking those, it queues the messages for delivery through the smarthost defined in the configuration file, which comes straight back to the same SMTP gateway. This seems to be an issue with messages that cannot be delivered via mailertable.

The problem is not that the mails are returned after several hours; they are returned immediately and removed from the queue and delivery is never re-attempted later. Also, of course I understand there's technically a difference between sending someone a message that isn't delivered and getting a DSN back, versus the mail simply never being delivered, but realistically speaking the mail is lost as far as the recipient is concerned if it never gets to them.
