comment Is there a maximum of open files per process in Linux?
What language is this written in? Also does you app interact with any other apps on the same machine? For example lets say your app opens 1000 socket connections to a DB that is on the same machine that will result in at least an additional 1000 open files system wide.

So based on points 1&2) my absolute min for Europe to the US of 40 odd ms is going to be a large under estimation. On 3) I understand what you are saying but I have been to the actual physical location of both servers....

Yeh I guessed that Google was using some fancy Routing or other tricks\magic because a trace route to the IP that was allegedly on the west cost showed a trace time of '00s of ms then jumped to 20ms...

comment Problems using Crystal reports infoview over the internet
Have done this and the problem is that the windows client is sending a tcp RST back after 4 mins. I have looked into this and there does not seem to be any way to stop this from happening. What I need now is a way for Business Objects to send a keep alive to stop this happening

comment Problems using Crystal reports infoview over the internet
Hi I have been investigating this some more. And it seems that Windows sends a tcp reset after 4 minutes this is what is killing the report. My question now is, surely there is some way to have Crystal return results for a long report??

Hey user59178 Can you explain what you mean a bit more. When you say a different IP for a different user. Do you mean if you log on as user X you get IP P and if you log on as user Y you get IP Q. James

comment MS SQL Server 2008: How to export all the tables into CSV?
My previous comment got garbled -- Good question and it seems no is the answer however there may be workarounds forums.oracle.com/forums/… Another option might be to downgrade from 2008 to 2005 or at least export as a 2005 db and then import. Here is another article oracle.com/technetwork/database/migration/sqlserver-095136.html

comment Linux not picking up new partition correctly on emc pseudo device
I have been investigating this with EMC, and it seems there is no way around this without a reboot. However as a work around I created a brand new lun and had that picked up dynamically and was able to get oracle to recognise this . J

Do you have any reservations set up? For instance the DHCP server can't give its own address or the address of the gateway to any one can it?

comment Is it possible to port filter traffic over an outbound VPN connection?
ok first things first; I assume the VPN you are talking about you are using a client on you local machine to connect back into your company. What I mean is you use their (your clients) infrastructure to set up the VPN. For example from their firewall to your company. That way your client can set the rules of the firewall. Second a ssh tunnel is a bit more complicated. And if you don't understand it, it is probably not the best choice for you. May be ask some unix heads in your company. J
