If the tty is in a gnu screen session you can control the blocking with the nonblock command. If you redirect STDOUT/STDERR to a file then you are subject to the blocking of the destination device.

tar -P -czf worked for me (note the flipped z and f). @symcbean I totally agree, creating tar files with absolute paths is a bad idea. But that's just my opinion. If it were me, I'd use the first command on the untar..
