Forgot missing -c to only get the grand total of the swap files.

comment Nearest PC equivalent to Mac Target Disk Mode?
Good answer. Nitpicky clarification: Current Mac's don't use "BIOS" (as the name for the software rather than type of software). PPC Macs used Open Firmware, whereas the Intel Macs use EFI but both are technically types of BIOSes.

Ick. NetBoot isn't happy. Have you tried manually starting it via serveradmin start netboot or check it's status with serveradmin status netboot? The easiest fix is to reboot or use netbootch (See my updated answer for the link) Thread about the error you're getting: discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1639135&tstart=0 Are you running 10.4 or 10.5? For 10.4 Apple has an article support.apple.com/kb/TA24714 on how to reset and 10.5.7 has a fix for the grey NetBoot issue.

comment Do my macs need anti-virus/malware products?
FWIW there are NO viruses for Mac OS X. A handful of Trojans and malware - yes but no viruses hence the valid claim of no viruses in the Mac vs. PC ads. That isn't to say there never will be any but that for a variety of reasons they don't exist.

To determine the actual vm usage the easiest is to run du -sh /var/vm - that said it may be artificially high if there is a sleepimage (most often seen on laptops) present. There are several tools available that can help you determine if it's memory that is causing the slow ups: vm_stat - particularly you're interested in the pageouts value - if it increases quite a bit then you know you're swapping heavily. For more info on how Apple manages their memory: developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/…

For clarification: 1. Is the bottleneck the VM system? As in when you see the memory stars there are a large amount if pageouts occurring. 2. Where are you getting your Free and VM size information? For example the VM Size stated in Activity Monitor is not the same as the size of the swap file.

Yes, DD-WRT will give you the information you want. The graphs are available in the Status section - personally I used to run (before the router died of old age) eko's versions or v24 preSP2 instead of v24 SP1 for bug fixes and the newer features. Tomato will install on your router as well.
