comment Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?
I notice from your Apple Discussions Group post that sudo softwareupdate would work: It sounds like a preference error, delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist and /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist. You can take a look at them for a key called CatalogURL if you'd like. I've added this to the answer.

If you try loading swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/index.sucatalog in your favourite web browser does it load? If not, you most likely are not able to access the Software Update server correctly. If you can then Software Update on your computer isn't processing updates correctly.

comment Mac OS X Server: Snow or not?
Snow Leopard Server plays great with Leopard clients - only the Address Book Server feature requires the clients to have 10.6 just as Leopard Server required 10.5 clients for iCal Server.

comment Mac OS X Server: what's the difference between the server userIDs and locals userIDs? Are they distinct?
Depending on your set up (and how home folders are done) it may or may not require to be able to connect to the server. A standard network home requires it to be on the network but a portable home directory or local home directory does not require a connection to the server.

comment How to use Xgrid?
FWIW, Xgrid and Compressor don't actually work together out of the box - instead Apple has a product included with Compressor called QMaster that does that job.
