comment Is there a way to get OSX to use more RAM and less swap?
To determine the actual vm usage the easiest is to run du -sh /var/vm - that said it may be artificially high if there is a sleepimage (most often seen on laptops) present. There are several tools available that can help you determine if it's memory that is causing the slow ups: vm_stat - particularly you're interested in the pageouts value - if it increases quite a bit then you know you're swapping heavily. For more info on how Apple manages their memory: developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/…

For clarification: 1. Is the bottleneck the VM system? As in when you see the memory stars there are a large amount if pageouts occurring. 2. Where are you getting your Free and VM size information? For example the VM Size stated in Activity Monitor is not the same as the size of the swap file.

Yes, DD-WRT will give you the information you want. The graphs are available in the Status section - personally I used to run (before the router died of old age) eko's versions or v24 preSP2 instead of v24 SP1 for bug fixes and the newer features. Tomato will install on your router as well.

comment Can someone tell me how to reliably backup over a network using TimeMachine, without a TimeCapsule?
It can be noted as well that you'll want to be running 10.5.6 or later - there are several changes in 10.5.6 that helped avoid corruption issues that also came out with Time Capsule's 7.4.1 firmware (for their server side but the client side changes help the OP)

Keep an eye on serverfault.com/questions/7098/… As far as I can tell there has never been an alternative OS for the Airport line and so any custom solutions are dead in the water.

The QuickLook plugin works for me if you base it off the filename's extension.

comment Mac OS X: how to run GUI apps on a headless machine
It used to work in 10.4, in 10.5 they added a security feature to loginwindow that will not allow applications from opening over top of the loginwindow process. This avoids massive security holes such as Finder opening as root when doing a remote install of Flip4Mac or Flash.

comment propagate removal of an ACL entry for just one user in Mac OS?
Definitely not ideal - the fact that OS X ACLs aren't the same as UNIX ACLs rises it's ugly head again.

comment Installing and maintaining Apache, MySQL, PHP on OSX
Thanks! I've edited it to reflect that - I neglected to mention that removing the /opt folder is only good for getting rid of everything you've installed with Fink/MacPorts instead of just specific packages.

comment How to test real network throughput between two points?
While iperf gives you the best possible transfer rates, it could be added that it makes debugging whether the issue is related to the protocol or configuration or the actual link itself.

FWIW, Markdown on it's own can not make tables - PHP Markdown Extra can make tables.

Yes it is - I didn't realize they had added this option to the GUI.

If that is the case, then your best option is to try Michael Glenn's answer.

It's worth noting your router is your modem as well. Do you find the same symptoms when you are hardwired to the modem as well?

Dropbox on sensing a conflict will keep both files and label them (in the filename) as conflicts for any type of file. Depending on the changes a VCS (version control system) such as Subversion or git may be the best choice for syncing and merging the changes. The downside is that it will require manual intervention at times (too much to use an automatic script depends on use)
