I couldn't use this one but this is an interesting answer. So, I flagged it as the answer.

comment Reverse SSH Tunnel closes after first connection
I have now tested enabling and disabling all dropbear features with no luck. :-(

Ok, I was able to confirm that the exact same command from an OpenSSH client worked fine. So, the question is why does the dropbear client close the connection. Unfortunately, it isn't an option for me to switch.

@dsumsky, I'm sorry I neglected to mention that the inside server is using dropbear ssh client. It doesn't seem to have a verbose option.

comment Add iptable rule before networking starts on Ubuntu Server
Sweet! It worked to add the pre-up. @Zoredache, if you add this as a answer I will select it as the answer.

comment How light is a ping?
Actually, I'm not using it to monitor either. I'm using it to trigger an action on the embedded device. Essentially, I have a bunch of embedded devices that will be pinging a server. I will use iptable rules on the server to respond to the ping requests or not. If a the device receives a response it will run a script. If the ping timesout it will not run the script. So, the point is to provide a way of triggering a script on the device in close to real time in a way that is managed from the server.

That's a good idea. I might be able to have it only ping every 5 seconds or so. In this case smokeping would not help. Most of the time I'm expecting to not receive a response from the ping. In the event that I do I will be running a script.
