+1 Thanks! I was worried that this procedure would be cumbersome, but it went just fine.

comment Why is there less latency on loopback than on a carp interface?
Thanks for the ideas, Willy. I move the configuration back to the interface off-hours and see what a packet trace turns up.

comment Why is there less latency on loopback than on a carp interface?
Thanks, Chris. I'll see if I can gather more info when traffic dies down. The current system is not using any firewall package or doing any traffic shaping. I should also note (will update original question) that we are receiving a large amount of traffic due to the job ads that we're displaying on the SO family sites. We're moving about 15 Mbps each way during normal hours.

The host is the master of that IP.

I should've included this in the post: these interfaces are carp interfaces. Completely slipped my mind until I ran netstat. Does that make a difference?

@tomjedrz - yes. as soon as I switched back, the latency was gone.

comment Overnight SQL Server Full Backup taking 4x longer, everything else slower, RAID problem?
try watching 'current disk queue'. This is a good number to trend over time (in healthy conditions) just for these cases. Not knowing your environment at all, a size of 130 sounds very high. I have a sql server with over 5,000 very active databases on it that goes no higher than 10 and mostly sits at 1. I would bring this number to Rackspace's attention.

comment Server Density or Scout-like Services for Windows?
Thank you very much for the recommendation - I should have been more specific about the size of the environment, as it will be somewhere around a dozen machines to begin with. I'm trying to keep support infrastructure as lean as possible for this project, so something like Server Density will probably work better. Thanks again, though. I'll keep this in mind for our larger environments.

comment DNS: Subdomains that Require Both an MX Record and a CNAME
I'm using MyDNS. It's quite a large configuration, and this little daemon has been a blessing up until this point. I am considering patching it, but am not very interested in dealing with whatever side effects that gives birth to. If it goes against the RFC, it sounds like a bad idea.

comment DNS: Subdomains that Require Both an MX Record and a CNAME
My DNS daemon is RFC strict, which just flat out refuses to send the response for the MX. I believe that there are some potential caching issues on the client side if we were to put this in place.

Get the time sync'd up, and see how things go: if I recall, kerberos won't work if there is more than a 5 minute lag.
