Actually, I was daft, your advice worked. It failed for another reason after making your suggested changes (typo in VPC for security group) - I did not catch that and thought it was the original problem.

I have up a gist for the complete manifest. I am using the CF tutorial template except it has been modified to use a subnet and with my attempt at applying a security group there.

Good idea - I'll try experimenting with those options and update.

That gives the same error unfortunately. If I do "SecurityGroupIds" : [ "sg-12345" ] then it works. I think I somehow I need to translate that literal security group snippet into a reference after it is created.

Correct - I am using an existing subnet.

Have you tried the /etc/resolv.conf timeout value specified below?

comment port 25 is reported to be open but no service is listening
Perhaps unlikely but another item to check might be some kind of NAT rule in effect on the interface IP (not localhost). Check with "iptables -nL -t nat".

comment PAM won't authenticate with mysql (make_scrambled_password deprecated)
Did you update your system? It seems one of the shared libraries that pam_mysql.so uses no longer has the symbol (aka function) "make_scrambled_password". Perhaps reverting to a previous version of that library will fix the problem. Or updating your pam_mysql.so to a newer version (preferable). If this is part of distro packages (and not hand-compiled) then all dependencies should match.

You can use "ldapsam" as a central source for Unix and Samba to avoid having to sync up users. I will post an answer for the immediate problem shortly.

From what I understand you have to create 1) create the system "user01" 2) Create the Samba "user01" in tdbsam with "smbpasswd -a user01" 3) Add "user01" to the system group wheel and then it may work.

What kind of account storage backend are you using? Samba does not directly read /etc/passwd but, rather, will use a backend such as "tdbsam" or "ldapsam" as documented here. So you would need to create "user01" in the user storage backend used by Samba.
