comment What is the best way to address users storing and streaming music within your company?
Even if I hide it there is still one person who operates with such transparency that they would make sure everyone is aware of the drives existance and would monitor it to make sure that it was healthy and functioning properly, never letting it be forgotten about, me. Given that I can't (and wouldn't) hide this from myself then what I would refer to as the sweeping it under a rug option, isn't an option.

Thank you for the additional heads up about being able to filter file types right on the file server. I didn't realize that was possible.

I thought about this too but I imagine the day when the CEO or one of the other executives or mangers walks into my office and says that they need me to recover the recording of an executive meeting that they accidentally deleted from their home directory, which just so happened to be in MP3 format.

I like the idea but it would still put a burden on our IT department both in terms of labor and legal requirements to support and maintain something like this. Most of our users are not technically savvy enough to be able to manage their music files themselves aside from what something like iTunes does for them by default. If I could control iTunes through GPO that would be moving in the right direction but I still don't like taking on the legal responsibility for storing files that may have been downloaded illegally.

comment What's your favorite Powershell command or script for system administration?
This doesn't seem to work for me. I ran this command against a CSV file that another powershell command was writing data to and it did not display the updates to the file as it was being changed but only showed me the lines of the file as it existed when I ran the command and then just hung waiting for CTRL+Break.

comment Can I utilize the full performance of a hypervisor's physical CPU cores when running a high CPU usage appliciation inside a VM?
Thanks for your input, I don't want to go down the path of clustering or Network load balancing VMs due to the increased complexity and because the IIS application is Commerce Server 2007 which would require additional Commerce Server licensing for use in additional VMs.

comment Can I utilize the full performance of a hypervisor's physical CPU cores when running a high CPU usage appliciation inside a VM?
So your answer would be that there is no way way to achieve the performance of 8 physical cores in a VM regardless of how physical cores the hypervisor actually has?

comment How to mount VHDs from command-line on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2
+1 for recommending the use of Hyper V manager from a Windows 7 machine. I do this all the time and it works great.

comment How do VMs in a Hyper V R2 cluster respond in the event that the node of the cluster the VM was running on fails?
Just to confirm, the VM will automatically start on the other node of the cluster or I will have to manually start the VM?

comment How do I resolve the error “(\Tahoma8)You can install Virtual Machine Additions only on a valid virtual machine…”?
I was able to bring the VM back up under the original Virtual Server 2005 environment and uninstall the virtual machine additions. I have to believe there is another way to do this but for now this is as good as it gets. Thanks

comment What are some good tools for setting up an Active Directory based company directory?
We have SharePoint 2007 implemented in our organization but it does not provide an easy to use company directory that includes people's pictures. A custom SharePoint list would also not accomplish this as the information is to dense and not easily displayed enough. I don't want to do custom web part development for this as I want to just purchase the best of breed tool instead of re-inventing the wheel.

comment How to install Windows to a PC without a CD but with Ubuntu on it? (No USB install possible)
I can't claim to be original with this idea though. Dell used to provide CD's with their Server 2k3 install disks that were actually a linux live CD that did the same thing I am describing and then slipstreamed drivers and a configuration inf into the copied version of the OS install that resided in a partition. That way they didn't have to deal with the "please insert a floppy disk with your raid drivers" nonsense and not have to burn separate OS distribution disks for each hardware configuration.

This is a remarkably good idea.

comment Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?
The point of the question is to find a software solution that does not require a network admin to be involved in simple tasks like setting up DHCP reservations. Because of our requirements we have to route traffic between three different subnets 10.200.0.0/23, 192.168.0.0/24, and 192.168.1.0/24 which at least in my understanding requires me to have an interface with an IP on each of those subnets.

comment Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?
I love CLI and completely support it's use and use it liberally myself but I want to empower the developers on my team so that they can service their own requests for DHCP reservations and other simple tasks without having to learn linux/unix/BSD style CLI. The additonal risk that we take on that someone might mess something up via CLI and cause the dev team downtime is also unacceptable. It is worth the cost of windows licensing to make this easy for them I just need to know where the right place to spend the money is.

comment If I cannot recover the database that Symantec Backup Exec used to store information about tape backups then can I recover my tape backups?
How long would it take for example for a 250 gb database backup to recatalog so that you could start restoring it?

comment How to use a Volume Shadow Copy to make backups
Maybe your right. I don't understand how your answer, "You can't" is correct when the OP found a way to do what he described. Your long answer isn't relevant to the question asked because even though the api only allows for "partial snapshots" you can still mount a representation of the entire volume at a point in time and back it up as the OP desired. If you could clarify what you mean in your original post so that it is edited to address what the OP has been able to accomplish I will happily remove the down vote and add an upvoate if the information is relevant.

+1 for not accepting no for an answer and pushing through to prove that there is a viable solution out there that some of the other posters could have offered instead of replying that it cannot be done.

Your short and long answer are both wrong and the term "Volume Shadow Copy" should have been enough to indicate what the user was looking for even if this term is slightly ambiguous. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Copy

-1 You misinterpreted the question. He is not trying to use VSS as the source of a backup, he is trying to use it to create a read only point in time snapshot of his files that he can then transfer to a tape drive or some other medium. I don't understand why this isn't a great use case for this technology?
