comment OS X Server with Open Directory and Network Configuration
Thanks for a detailed answer. The WiFi network is the residence's network, and I have no access to it, and actually, it requires a browser based password entry, and not standard WiFi security. This to make people pay more for faster access, etc. So I want ally my machines on the LAN, and I want the Server to offer Domain based logon to those machines, with roaming profiles. I had this all setup on Ubuntu as an OpenLDAP server, and OS X Clients, and now I thought I'd update to OS X Server

Also, with Ubuntu, I can do: Limit this interface to its network services, which essentially allows me to let internet connect only on WiFi. Anything like that on OS X?

Ok. So I setup OpenVPN on the Ubuntu VPS, that's great. But how do I get my OS X Machine to authenticate against it on login, as if it were an Active Directory?

a VPN wouldn't give me roaming profiles from the login prompt. Or can I direct the login prompt to authenticate against the VPN

@Matt I found out you can do sudo smbd -p 1139 for example. But even on the vps when I do smbclient -L //localhost I get Connection to localhost:1139 failed (Error NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)

just practice. plus single sign on for multiple users via ldap & samba that backs-up the profiles to the vps

comment linux intrusion detection software
What would the log entry say if there's a connection? And do I look in /var/log/syslog? Or is there an sshd log?
