comment Ansible: Excecute task only when a tag is specified
yes, you can achieve the behavior by ensuring you always use the right ansible-playbook options, but I think the OP is asking for a way to annotate a task so that it isn't executed unless a specific tag is explicitly added in the ansible-playbook command.

it sounds like what you need is some task setting like limit_to_tags: foo which does not exist and I don't think that is possible right now. A future implementation also needs to have a plan for whether to AND or OR those tags together.

comment Attempt to www rewrite nginx on Amazon EC2 makes my domain's URLs unavailable
Interestingly, this suggests the use of server_name "" was interfering with resolving the apex domain domain.com. Even if that were happening though, my "No direct matches" page also uses an index.html page so the load balancer should have still let the server pass the health check. If anyone in the future has any theories, please comment as I am curious. Regardless, the issue has disappeared. Thanks.

Just making the change to fileB you suggest solves my issue. Now domain.com is resolves normally, www.domain.com is redirected to domain.com, and anything else goes to a catch all page. I tried using your fileC, but it did not seem to redirect so I just kept my own, which now seems to work. Thanks soo much! I would give you more points if I could!
