comment VPS versus Cloud
I'm not sure how water suspended in the atmosphere could help you 'copy/paste' VMs. ;) There is no technical stuff; it's all sales jargon. If you're talking about migrating VMs, many hypervisors will do that. Take a look at Hyper-V or VMWare.

comment terminal service remoteapp disappears when opening file
Under the Application logs. Keep in mind there's nothing terribly special about remoteApp. You're still logging in to a server and running an app. Try running the program while RDPed in to the server instead and see if an error message pops up, or if the app simply crashes to the desktop. If it works fine, check the application logs and see if there's an error that can help you hunt down the problem.

What do you mean "just disappears"? We really don't have anything to go on here. Have you checked the event log? Can you tell if the program is crashing?

comment Why are additional DNS records only returned when the query isn't cached?
Ah, so maybe DNS is an issue here. Could you perhaps link me to something that explains the SMTP misconfiguration?

comment CloudFront, S3, EC2: how can you reroute request from CloudFront to EC2 unless file exist at S3?
@AleksandrMakov Took me a bit to find anything on it actually. It doesn't seem to be outlined in the docs. If you stumble upon anything more detailed, please let me know!

comment Azure IP Blacklisted
I think the better question is, why does it matter? Are you hosting Exchange from an Azure VM? Why? That's not a good spot for hosting mail. You might want to rethink your solution.

comment Dynamic DNS replacement for my home router: Do I understand the pricing of Amazon route 53 correctly?
@TomTom Ah, didn't see your comment before. I am neither anonymous, nor a coward. I found your answer to be unreasonably snarky.

"a hosted zone with 100,000 standard queries would be charged $0.050" that confused me too. Is that total or is that for queries? Seems your interpretation is correct, but the confusion doesn't surprise me.

Could use some more detail; maybe some screenshots of your configuration? I'm not sure why you have three rules or where exactly you're putting them. Try running your exact LDAP query in AD UC and see what it returns.

comment How can I list hidden administrative shares using PowerShell?
Looks like adding -Filter "type=2147483648" to gwmi "Win32_Share" will display only admin shares. "type=0" will show only disk drive shares.

comment How can I list hidden administrative shares using PowerShell?
Ah, guess I should have been more clear. I need to list only administrative shares, so I can differentiate between those and hidden shares.

comment Remove or Disable “Add a Network Location”
I did a quick search for an answer and came up empty, as I'm sure you did too. There's a good reason for this: removing "Add a Network Location" will do nothing to prevent a user from typing in a UNC path. You might be better off securing your file shares instead of worrying about the "Add a Network Location" button.

@JasonClark That sounds about right. Would you really walk up to a construction site and ask what the difference between a hammer and a paintbrush is?

comment Missing 'HKCU:\Network' subkey when browsing registry remotely with PowerShell
Ended up getting the user's SID and running $Reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey("Users", $computername); $RegKey= $Reg.OpenSubKey("$SID\\Network") instead. Worked well.

comment Missing 'HKCU:\Network' subkey when browsing registry remotely with PowerShell
Interesting. I'm seeing REGISTRY\USER\.DEFAULT under hivelist. Is it only loading the default values? Can I access HKCU remotely or will I have to get the target user's SID first?
