Yes, based on the above link, I've gone with the ssh server. My problem is that it is still available via port 9814 and not enforced using authorized_keys.

I've already removed the key from my ssh agent and have tried removing the public key on authorized_keys, and confirmed I can still clone from the repo. I clone it using git clone git@host.com I am not sure if it is called git protocol, but I was talking about this: kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-daemon.html which is a daemon running on TCP 9418

excellent, that was it. I'm not sure why it's using ssh though even though I see git@ when running git remote -v.

I ssh to my server (where I have the iptables rules) and run git from there (using git not https)

Thanks, I think I'm starting to get it. But regarding the host name and the domain name being arbitrary, do they only mean something within the local network? How do they compare to top level domains like .com?
