Please give the specific model and generation of HP ProLiant server that you're trying to use. Otherwise, this question is unanswerable.

comment How to get 2 servers under control (Red Hat Linux)
Hire a pro :) I love situations like this. But shouldn't this have been a consideration before the admin was fired? Usually hold severance in exchange for the admin's coöperation.

comment Server utilization and how to deal with datacenter failure
No, I'm saying that there's probably some need to factor in growth and additional capacity for unpredictable usage patterns. Something like 60% utilization seems healthier.

comment Server utilization and how to deal with datacenter failure
I don't think I'd want to run at 80% utilization under any circumstances.

No detail on the actual hardware makes and models involved? Wouldn't that be useful information?

comment ZFS: how to replace disk that faulted while resilvering after another fault?
RAIDZ3 is complicated. ZFS almost always works better with mirrors. It sounds like these are cheap disks and that they're not connected to a backplane, but via individual SATA cables. Are you sure the hardware is healthy otherwise?

comment What could be wrong with our HP Proliant Server
You may have disk array corruption from the backplane failure. There's no guarantee that the data is okay. Try booting with a rescue CD to see if there's any structured data on the drive. When you start the system, does it tell you how many "Logical Drives" exist on the Smart Array?

No. The server is very old. I'm not sure what options you have right now.
