I've never had a problem with a non-HP disk in a ProLiant server due to HP's firmware. The only case where this was an issue was an STEC ZeusIOPS SSD, which does not work cleanly with Smart Array P410 controllers in a DL380 G6/G7 backplane. But that's a very narrow case.
