comment How to replace failed drive in RAID 5 array in HP DL380 G4 server
It's a DL380 G4, so the likely controller is the onboard Smart Array 6i or a PCI-X based 641/6400. Their last firmware updates occurred in 2008.

This is likely a smart array 6i or 641 or 6400-series controller with parallel SCSI disks. The only reason this type of array wouldn't rebuild automatically is an URE condition on the other disks.

Bad advice, at least until we get the status of the drive array. There's a high-likelihood that this is the result of read errors on the remaining drives in the RAID 5 array.

Do you know the server make/model? How about the RAID controller? What OS are you using?

comment Reasons for missing IP info in `last` output on pts logins?
No need. libutempter is not linked in EL4 (via ldd), but it is linked in the EL5 and EL6 script command. This feature change has likely been in place for Red Hat-like systems since the 2007 introduction of RHEL 5. coreutils on EL4 is version 5.2.1. On EL5 it's version 5.97.

We'll follow the RHEL bug. It'll be interesting to see how they respond.

comment iscsi versus non-iscsi san?
Just saying that it can be faster under specific circumstances. Are you sure about the relationship between the two products? They were marketed by Dell at the same time. Different applications...

comment How do I upgrade my HP ProLiant ML150 G6 server RAM?
Use registered RAM anyway. The unbuffered DIMMs have too many downsides to be considered useful in your scenario. When I encounter systems that have unbuffered RAM, I discard it and replace with registered when I need to add more RAM. The link I provided in the answer lays out all of the RAM combinations and the part numbers for registered and unbuffered DIMMs. UDIMM Maximum Configuration (1 CPU model) via 6 x 4GB UDIMMs - 4GB UDIMM (HP #500672-B21)

I have experienced the worst... And it's typically fine. I haven't encountered VMDK or guest OS corruption as a result of a hard shutdown/reboot.

To weather brief outages. But at my bigger sites, I have 2-4 hours of UPS power available for the VMWare cluster, storage and networking.

The shutdown policy is quite long by default. But to be honest, I don't run UPS shutdown on my ESXi hosts or clusters. Seems counter-intuitive, but has never been an issue.

Have you timed the shutdown process of the VM's through the host shutdown? Can the battery hold long enough for that period?

I feel your pain. You've taken the right steps. Can you give an idea as to how much mail (volume) is being sent to these addresses? These seem like order confirmation messages related to a e-commerce or ERP application. How frequently are they sent?
