comment esxi 5.1 (free) reduce vmdk size (not zero the data, reduce size by a certain amount)
If you use the right tool for your guest OS to consolidate data/zero free space, you can potentially reclaim data. But this is usually done in conjunction with a datastore move and a licensed copy of vSphere. That $500-$600 for the basic vSphere Essentials doesn't look so bad!

this put me in the right direction. At this point, we realize that the addition of a few new devices potentially pushed the switch over a threshold. With already-high CPU utilization, the packet drops make sense.

See my question. "tcam utilization of 2960. Not available on the 4507."

CPU utilization pastebined (1) and (2) and history updated in my question. The 2960 is layer-2 only. The 4507 does some light routing.

Finally replaced all of the switches after too many ports degraded to the point of being unusable. Finally, a good use for SmartNet!

comment Do SAS expanders work transparently with SAS controllers?
@sbrattla Then your expansion would need to be external. Something like the LSI 9280 controller would keep the internal ports but also allow you to expand into an external JBOD. But at that point, do you really need more than 16 disks in a single array? Are larger drives an option?

@sbrattla For the controller you've listed, you have plenty of internal ports. What type of server is it?
