I don't know what problem you have but if it's firewall related and you can't open port 993, you can also use IMAP with SSL using STARTTLS on port 143. The connection to port 143 will then be encrypted as well.

exactly. even when your waveserver is connected to googles (federation) the blips/waves will remain on your server, unless some user from the google server is invited to that wave. Atleast, that is how i understand it.

Then you should have made your question more clear, i think. That's how i would explain a sysadmin who asked me "Hey, i've heard of thie LDAP-thingie here and there and i took a look at wurley.demo.phpldapadmin.info but didn't really grasp it." From then on it's as easy as reading wikipedia, tutorials, books or the RFC.

As a side note i've lost a lot of data with ext3 due to power outage and found now way to get the data back. Since this heavy disappointment my own hardware runs XFS and, same as you, i'm eager to have ZFS or similar.
