You may wish to look at SNMP for writing, too. See stackoverflow.com/questions/9170644/… for an example.

comment What is a T1 in modern terms?
The other microcosm which seems to love T1 is radio. Many radio stations (AM/FM broadcast) will use one or more T1 lines with purpose built codecs to send audio and control data from the studio to the transmitter. Public safety radio / trunked radio will use fractional T1 lines to send audio from cell sites back to the network, and use a couple channels for control.

And sometimes, the fact that faxes are still used causes T1's to still be used. Try running reliable (>99.99%) faxing over anything but a TDM line...

comment how to expose Domain Controller on public IP address, and make other DC talk to it?
You could use a simple VPN like Hamachi. Running a DC over the internet could be problematic, even in the short term, if either ISP is blocking SMB, RPC, or any of the other protocols which happen to overlap between virus propagation and DC replication.

comment Preventing Windows from deleteing our root CA
@richb, can you post the makecert command you are using, or a copy of the certificate? Such a deletion should not be happening.

@richb, is your certificate valid? is it expired? do you have all intermediate certs installed? It shouldn't be deleted from trusted roots without reason.

@richb, typically you would not need to do this sort of mod. Third-party certs are specifically separated so they can be maintained automatically. If you are adding your own CA, use "Trusted Root Certificate Authorities" and it will not get removed by updates.
