comment Can I completely disable ASP.NET in IIS, together with all side effects?
If you want to host websites without having .net at all, I'd suggest looking at Apache, Apache Tomcat, zope, bottle.py, node.js or any number of other non .net free webservers

@romkyns For the server, go to "Request Filtering" click Deny File Extension and add aspx, cs, vb, asax, etc. It'll effectively disable asp.net. You can't remove asp.net without removing iis.

@AdamThompson caching was set to manual. Changed it to none, I'll see if I run into it again.

@AdamThompson Not a DFS, I'll check the caching though.

Mapped drive using SMB usually. Sometimes I'll do a two-step, copy it to a directory that's not in use, then I'll log into the server and copy it over. That's usually a second to last resort.

comment Sharepoint High Disk I/O - WSS_Search_SBS2011.mdf
@HaydnWVN If you stop it in SharePoint it shouldn't start up again. In the services mmc you can look at the dependencies in the properties, there shouldn't be anything depending on search that you can't do without, especially if you're not using search. If you actually DISABLE it in services also, it won't start up even if has dependencies.

comment How to deal with mass out of office / company closure
There are cases where setting an out of office for a group of people is acceptable. For instance, we had an environment that hosted a subdomain with mailboxes. We got rid of the subdomain and pulled the mailboxes into the root domain. We wanted to keep the old mailboxes out there for a time with an auto-reply so that people sending mail incorrectly would get the message, much like a page is moved site that redirects after 3 seconds that you eventually get rid of.
