The choice to use .local is not mine. I'm trying to avoid FQDNs because they would involve mycompanysobnoxiouslylongname.local.

@Fuzzyfelt I am part of an organization. My internet is supplied by them. The regulations on their network specify that routers are not allowed and using them is grounds for internet/network access suspension. I want to segregate some of my devices from the main network such that they are only accessible to devices within my network. Devices within my network that are accessing devices outside of it (internet, or devices on the main network) need to do using their own MAC addresses. I am not trying to circumvent or subvert anything. I'm only trying to restrict access to certain devices.

@Fuzzyfelt I am not in control of the subnet that I must connect to, to get internet. All I can do is deal with it. The way it is set up, my access privileges would be revoked if use a router.

The way the primary LAN is managed makes it necessary pass MAC addresses. If I have multiple devices connecting behind one MAC address (a router), my access will be revoked.
