comment how can I see the emails sent by my web server?
@mfinni, Where do you see that you have to be running your infrastructure on Amazon? See aws.amazon.com/ses/faqs/#1 Excerpt: "Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a highly scalable and cost-effective bulk and transactional email sending service for businesses and developers. Amazon SES eliminates the complexity and expense of building an in-house email solution or licensing, installing, and operating a third-party email service for this type of email communication. In addition, the service integrates with other AWS services..."

comment Should VMWare Tools always be installed in headless Linux guests?
Heard back from Provider 2. They have essentially admitted an oversight (FML). In a VirtualCenter deploy VMWare Tools should definitely be installed, even in headless Linux guests. (Selecting as best answer since it was the closest.)

Thanks for your reply. With regard to timekeeping though VMWare best practices are to use NTP not VMWare Tools. kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/… "In all cases use NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization."

comment Ubuntu PowerEdge T110
FWIW, I found the BIOS on the T110 dodgy. It would not recognize an Adaptec 5405Z even though a lowly SC440 I had lying around had no problem with it. I ended up sending the T110 back to DELL.

comment How to install dkim for postfix in centos 5.4
When you create a TXT record you provide selector._domainkey.example.com as the Host and k,t & p parameter/values as the Text Record. _domainkey is not a variable, that is what should be in the value for the Host part. selector is a variable and is usually default or mail or whatever you chose as the selector. I would suggest you separate the web/app and database tiers into different questions.

comment MySQL innodb has lots of processes hanging in “update” state once every minute
One other thing you might look at is innodb_log_file_size. If that is the default (5MB) it is most likely way too small. MySQL docs would say that you could set this to 1/2 the size of your buffer pool (or 2GB) but it also affects recovery time. You might want to try 256MB or 128MB. See here: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/…

comment Preferred mail system/server for a company?
If it was 50 I would outsource and use Google Apps (free) or Rackspace ($1/mailbox/mo for regular POP/IMAP). If it's 50,000 outsourcing is likely cost prohibitive and favors hiring email administration resources and running your own servers (and paying for infrastructure).

How about specifying how many users the solution is intended for?

comment VOIP Codec Preference
In my experience g729 provides the best PLC algorithm when doing VoIP over the unreliable Internet. g711 call quality degrades rapidly with lost packets. iLBC is okay - but users can complain that voice sounds robotic. Just spend the money on g729 licenses if you don't want a support nightmare.

Depends on the module. If need earlier in the boot process use /etc/rc.modules as James mentioned.

comment How would you build a cheap Virtual Server farm for home development?
Digging into this some more I guess one would go with VMWare vSphere Essentials which includes VMWare vCenter Server for Essentials which includes the vSphere Client. It looks like this can be had for $995/year (support is optional). However, vCenter Server and vSphere Client are Windows only and unless you go back in time and use Windows XP you have to pony up for Windows Server (2008) since Vista and 7 are not supported for vCenter Server or vCenter Update Manager. I wonder how their own salespeople keep this straight!
