comment MySQL Binary Log activated = high-end server damn slow
MySQL will say that innodb_log_file_size should be 1/2 the size of your buffer pool but specifying such a large size may take a long time upon recovery if the server crashes. You could probably set it to 1024M to start and go from there. Note that you need to cleanly create new ib_logfile* i.e. you need to specify the parameter/value, cleanly shutdown your server, move aside the old files and restart your server.

comment How do you do your FTP on a web server?
You can use FTP with SSL (FTPS) to avoid transmission of plain text passwords. But yah, depending upon how your network is setup it can be messy. Still, there is a surprisingly big chunk of the corporate world that uses FTP.

comment How do I enter a strong (long) DKIM key into DNS?
Have you carefully considered your key size? The RFC states: "Verifiers MUST be able to validate signatures with keys ranging from 512 bits to 2048 bits, and they MAY be able to validate signatures with larger keys." So your long key may not get verified.

comment *nix OS that is easy to update to latest software
FYI, CentOS 5.6 release is imminent and should contain PHP 5.3 (RHEL 5.6 now ships with blessed PHP 5.3 packages). MySQL is still 5.0.77 and Apache is 2.2.3 (but that's just RH's crazy convention for the most part).

comment how can I see the emails sent by my web server?
@mfinni, Where do you see that you have to be running your infrastructure on Amazon? See aws.amazon.com/ses/faqs/#1 Excerpt: "Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a highly scalable and cost-effective bulk and transactional email sending service for businesses and developers. Amazon SES eliminates the complexity and expense of building an in-house email solution or licensing, installing, and operating a third-party email service for this type of email communication. In addition, the service integrates with other AWS services..."

comment Should VMware Tools always be installed in headless Linux guests?
Heard back from Provider 2. They have essentially admitted an oversight (FML). In a VirtualCenter deploy VMWare Tools should definitely be installed, even in headless Linux guests. (Selecting as best answer since it was the closest.)

comment Should VMware Tools always be installed in headless Linux guests?
Thanks for your reply. With regard to timekeeping though VMWare best practices are to use NTP not VMWare Tools. kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/… "In all cases use NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization."

comment Ubuntu PowerEdge T110
FWIW, I found the BIOS on the T110 dodgy. It would not recognize an Adaptec 5405Z even though a lowly SC440 I had lying around had no problem with it. I ended up sending the T110 back to DELL.

When you create a TXT record you provide selector._domainkey.example.com as the Host and k,t & p parameter/values as the Text Record. _domainkey is not a variable, that is what should be in the value for the Host part. selector is a variable and is usually default or mail or whatever you chose as the selector.
