For the memory "problem": just get more memory!

Do a mysqladmin --verbose processlist and examine the queries.

I suspect that write barriers are being sent where the performance is poor.

Please list the filesystem (e.g. ext3 or ext4) for each along with the options (e.g. noatime) to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

The default datadir is /var/lib/mysql and given your laptop file info the datadir is on ext4. Edit /etc/fstab to include barrier=0 as a mount option and reboot.

comment mysql client slow login strace
If you do a SHOW PROCESSLIST while the client is connecting do you have some relatively long running thread in "checking permissions" state? How many users are in the mysql.user table?

comment Does the OS (Ubuntu LTS vs CentOS) has a significant impact on the performance of a MySQL Server
I think it will be difficult for anyone to answer this without doing an apples-to-apples test. You should do your own testing where you use the same version of MySQL with identical configuration settings not only of MySQL (my.cnf) but of the filesystem, etc. I would be very surprised if after all that effort to standardize if there was a significant performance difference.

comment Mysql using the whole CPU, can't explain why
Also see if you have some long running queries. e.g. mysqladmin processlist
