Is the mount freezing or is the entire system freezing? Is there anything interesting at the end of a dmesg output after trying to mount it (assuming the system doesn't freeze)? Are you able to just mount the volume without using the fstab entry?

A lot of them seem to have it out of the box now but your mileage may vary. Some may do the encode/decode in software on their base models with an upgrade path to a dedicated hardware module or completely different appliance. You would need to ask the vendor to know for sure.
