I started developing software on a small Casio basic calculator in 1987. I graduated to C, then C++ and finally Java. Although I work daily with Java I have a wide base of experience in a lot of other languages and technologies as well. Zmanda can do it both ways or online and then I'm pretty sure you can download it to backup the backup. Also as someone commented there is little chance S3/Amazon is going away anytime soon.

I believe you will be fine because whatever does the traffic shaping will do it at the same layer for both paths.
