comment In a server with WS2012 Storage Spaces, do I still need hw/sw RAID?
Can someone explain why is this not constructive? I feel this question is technical, there probably is a definitive answer to it (either yes or no, Storage Spaces can or cannot provide resiliency for 100% of files on the system) and is related to what ServerFault is about.

The question was whether Storage Spaces alone can protect me against HDD failures, no matter how performant or reliable it is. Because it seems to me from the FAQ that Storage Spaces will never cover 100% of files on my server so I'd just like to confirm that.

comment Azure Virtual Machines - what fault tolerance do they provide?
Virtual machine's VHD is a large file (tens of gigabytes) and there will be a time difference between when you start the copy operation and when it finishes. During this time span, the VM will be running, modifying some bytes of those tens of gigabytes. Volume Shadow Copy ensures that the file, no matter how large, will be copied in a consistent state. So the question is, will Azure make a consistent copy of my VM or not?

comment What are the advantages / disadvantages of using Storage Spaces in WS2012 vs RAID?
My setup would be a couple of physical disks to host this Storage Space and Windows on it, Hyper-V installed and the real work being done inside those VMs. My hope is that Storage Spaces will provide some fault tolerance but of course I would still do full image backups regularly to another set of drives somewhere. I don't see Storage Spaces as a threat, quite to the contrary.

So there is no way to "open" existing VMs without explicitly exporting / importing them? You just mentioned a couple of things that might cause trouble if I were to recreate all machines again (losing snapshots, VM settings etc.)
