Perhaps the characters in filenames were created using different encoding and you need to mount the NFS share using the correct one using something like the iocharset mount option on Linux?

That makes sense - it's a shame that this one doesn't allow disabling this feature - I'm aware of this and I've never actually given ZFS or other any other RAID the entire disk to use for this very reason :)
