comment SQL not stopping / starting
This might seem like a silly thing to ask, but sometimes we forgot the most obvious things. Is there a chance your drive is out of space? That is the one time I had such a error in Debian for mysql.

Semi-related not a answer: Have you considered dumping windows backup? It can be a pretty terrible when dealing with exactly this kind of problem. If all your doing is basic backup consider using Veeam Endpoint Backup. Does Baremetal and File-level recovery. (its free and just released by veeam its great). veeam.com/endpoint-backup-free.html

I am by no means a expert in iptables, but isnt it suppose to be like this "iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 22 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.10.2.2"

comment Infrastructure advice - appliaction and network servers
I wouldn't consider virtualization resource sharing as a "Gotcha" but as a benefit. There are many points in time when a domain controller for example wouldn't need 2gb (lets say its using 512mb) but you provided it with 2gb. By pooling the resources the Hypervisor is smart enough to know that the VM using only 512mb and will allow a different vm to use those resources. Another example. In most corporate environments at night there is very little network activity and servers are underutilized. A hypervisor can be smart enough to power down other Hosts and place all VMS on a single host.

You should virtualize your environment. It will give you a lot more freedom and control.
