My first experience with a computer was a Apple IIc in the 5th grade.

I've been a technophile ever since.

Welcome to the site. Please make sure to fully spell any abbreviations the first time so everyone knows exactly what you are talking about. We, as professionals, know the acronym, but not everyone who reads the post may know. Now, wre you saying Windows Update on each workstation forgets the group policy and goes to Microsoft.com directly for the Windows Update? Your post is not clear what the problem is. Also, this is more of a ServerFault question as it relates directly with Windows Servers.

Why do you need Office 2013 Home & Business if you have Office 365. The Office 365 subscription gives you access to all the applications as part of the subscription. Seems like you may be purchasing one or the other unnecessarily. OneDrive is also free. You should discuss licensing with Microsoft. If you are not on site, you may not be able to use volume keys (same key) without a domain license server. You should also ask since it sounds like a distributed office setup, you may not be able to utilize a volume key as they tend to be for single locations or at least a single network environment.

This article seems to suggest there's no performance gain from defragging a SSD

I just add c:\cygwin (assuming that is your install directory) to the environmental variables in Control Panel, System, Advanced, Environmental Variables, PATH

@JohnGardeniers Lewis is betting that the time it takes to copy small files across the network have a much greater overhead than the time it takes to put them into an ISO and then transfer that file. It really depends on your particular environment, but as unintuitive as it sounds, it can be faster to transfer one consolidated instead of thousands of tiny files.
