comment How do I access and use an AWS RDS reserved instance?
Great, thank you. I wish this was mentioned someone on the AWS site, or if it is, I missed it.

comment Connecting to a new RDS instance from an EC2 instance
I have the elastic IP address attached to the EC2 instance and it's verified when I click on the Instance and I see it both in the header and the description of the instance. As to the security group, I already have the EC2 instance security group added to the RDS security group.

If you mean in the php script, then yes, I am using the RDS end point. I just did not want to post the actual endpoint here

comment Enable Password Login for SSH on Amazon Linux AMI
/etc/init.d/ssh restart should probably be /etc/init.d/sshd restart

You don't need to delete any keys. Follow the instructions in the answer below. You also may want to try /etc/init.d/sshd restart as the last step

comment Linux: Centos: enabling basic authentication
I am not a sysadmin, but I am required to do this for a client (and the requirement is to use basic authentication). I don't have time to read large sections of the Apache manual, I used all my available hours to get to the state I described in my question. I guess if this is a hardcore server forum, and there is no room for those who may have an occasional question, but don't make a living as sysadmins, then I'll continue researching the issue
