comment Mapping mod_jk to application with different name from alias
It would work if there was an application called x deployed on loadbalancer-y. That's the problem - the new app as a different name, but the bosses want the URL to stay the same. I'm trying to find a way to tell JKMount to request application Y when the URL X us requested.

comment Why do we still use “www” in URLs?
There was a campaign a few years ago to change www.yourdomainhere.com to web.yourdomainhere.com as it was a lot quicker to say. I think MIT were involved, either because they implemented this idea on their servers, or because they had come up with the proposal in the first place.

Thanks! Do you have any details about what the numbers mean? (I'm still going to accept your answer though, as you've answered my initial question)

comment Creating a text file with no newline at the end of it
That works great, but it still means that the password appears in the process list if someone manages to view it at just the right time. In the end I have combined your answer with @Eduardo's: cat password.txt | awk '{printf $1}' > new_password.txt.

Sadly our machines don't have HISTCONTROL set, and I can't really change those settings...

We're using Nagios - that's what alerted us to the problem in the first place :)

Thanks, that's a relief! As I'm quite new to LDAP, I don't really know what I'm looking for in the docs - are you able to be a bit more specific please? Thanks in advance...

comment JBoss Cluster Best Practices
Not an answer, but you may be interested to know that we deploy by creating symlinks from our deploy folder to a NAS - it works fine, and allows for quick changing of versions: just change where a symlink points (obviously make sure that JBoss has enough time to realise that an undeploy has happened otherwise it can get confused and not actually do anything)

comment Install correct libraries depending on 64/32 bit
Thanks for the update - in the end I went for the arch command as that's what a UNIX guy here recommended. I think arch does the same as uname -m, so I'm going to accept your answer :)

comment Install correct libraries depending on 64/32 bit
Thanks, but I'm not sure that'll work on our heavily-customised JBoss installation. The JBoss we're installing isn't being managed by yum, so I don't know if a yum-installed APR would work? The usual place to put APR is inside a folder on JBoss, though I suppose it could be configured to look elsewhere...

I've updated the question with some more IP information. Thanks for this answer though, it's reassuring (and not at all being taken personally!)

This is my problem - I don't really know how to find that kind of thing out - like I said before, I'm not really a network guy, so I don't really know where to look.

You are right, it sounds like a routing problem more than anything else.

I've not been given any specific reasons, but these machines are part of my employer's main internet facing servers, and they like to keep things under control (which is obviously why they asked a J2EE programmer to look at them). Therefore, perhaps they feel routing is better than installing more servers/opening more ports on them?
