I'd try to narrow it down some more. Can you access any websites via IP instead of hostname? If so, that would point to a DNS issue. Does the same thing happen if you boot into another OS? If so, that indicates a hardware problem.

So, are those critical of the OP's handling of the smell suggesting that there is no difference in urgency between a smell and a fire/smoke? If you smell something burning in your house but see no smoke and hear no alarm, do you rush you and your family out of the house and call 911?
