Alright, the production servers on a VM so this will actually be pretty simple to do. I'll just make a clone and set up a new host name. This feels pretty obvious (in a "ooooooh... crap" kind of way) now that you've said it.

So I found the reason why my client was installing mariadb's client. sudo apt-get purge libmariadbclient-dev made it so mysql-server installs the correct client. It does not, however, fix my error.

I did apt-get purge libmariadbclient18. went to install and saw this message. The following NEW packages will be installed: libdbd-mysql-perl libmariadbclient18 libmysqlclient18 mysql-client-5.5 mysql-server mysql-server-5.5 So it's not because I haven't uninstalled it. for some reason apt-get is installing mariadb's client.

comment Changing WebServer to use BSD Jails
So because my host isn't using port 80 I can use the same ip address (and the same apache configs) for my jail without conflicts. Thank you for the answer.

fair enough, I'm finding that although I'm a decent programmer I don't really know how systems work or even really how to ask questions yet. Thank you.

So I've read the jails section of the handbook and I've set up a rc.conf and the jail. I guess what I'm really asking is do I need to change any of my apache configs? Can I use the same IP address for the jail as the host machine? If I can, may I just leave my apache configs unchanged?
