comment Amazon CloudFront and EC2: Global Load Balancing
There are other benefits to using S3 that we'd like to maintain, so it's not as crazy as it would seem. Other stuff will be feeding the S3 pool with data... It's only the retrieval that needs this security layer.

comment DB2 in VMWare
I/O is often the bottleneck on virtualized DBMS. It can work, just make sure your SAN and connectivity (iSCSI? Fibre?) are up to snuff.

Not perfect but I think I can work with it from there. THANKS!

comment SQL Server 2005 dropping objects from DB on recovery?
I can't imagine any process would drop a trigger -- we have usual log shipping replication, db mirroring, and backup jobs. Not much other maintenance

comment SQL Server 2005 dropping objects from DB on recovery?
OH! Trigger is inserting from mirrored database to non-mirrored database on PRIMARY. I don't even think the db exists on the failover.... I wonder if tha twould cause problems?

I buy this for the login. But, why would a TRIGGER be missing? What if the trigger was created by the user with the missing sid, would it drop those owned objects?

comment Prevent unauthorized users from gaining network access?
I'm not trying to prevent anything per se. Just curious how a "secure" network should be implemented :D

comment SQL Server 2008 Log-shipping: Without a UNC drive: how?
If you have a VPN or some other connection, you can set up a UNC path pretty easily. Just edit windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts and put an entry for it in there. Then you can do \\foobar

comment Is bit rot on hard drives a real problem? What can be done about it?
Amuck: Not as part of the "RAID Standard", per se, but advanced RAID systems (firmwares, etc.) do that

comment Standby/Backup Exchange 2003 Server
Well, obviously if Excange itself blows up the data then it's difficult to recover from that (even if it's on an array). I'd like to do shipping so I guess the answer is upgrade to 2007. Thanks!!

comment Standby/Backup Exchange 2003 Server
I don't care about inbound emails while the server is down (SMTP will handle that). What I care about are emails sent/received AFTER my full backup has run. I want, essentially, an up-to-the-minute off-server copy of existing emails (like I would continually dump trans logs for SQL Server to a storage array) so when I need to recover my system no existing emails have been lost.

comment Server 2003/2008: DNS server has updated its own host (A) records
Most of them have more than one NIC, one doesn't (it's a VM). None have DHCP (can DNS servers even BE dhcp?) All have "Register in DNS" checked for only the static/allocated IPs

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there's an awful lot of failures in the event log related to this
