comment What is the best way to block IPs from an apache2 web server?
Yeah, I agree with c4urself - iptables feels like the right place to deal with this sort of thing.

Thanks, that's just what I was surfing for.

comment Why does sub_filter seem to not work when used in conjunction with proxy_pass?
I didn't have proxy_set_header Accept-Encoding ""; you need that to tell the backend that compression isn't allowed in a response.

In my embedded application, XFS, sadly, is not an option for me. Problem not solved. :'(

comment How to forward specific log file outside of /var/log with rsyslog to remote server?
Figured it out. My problem was that /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf already had a statement beginning with .;auth;authpriv.none.. That line seems to take precedence. So by adding the last line you've given, it has no effect. Instead, the pre-existing similar one must be modified. Very helpful. Thanks!

comment How to forward specific log file outside of /var/log with rsyslog to remote server?
This is very helpful, thank you Bryan. My only challenge here is the line to keep the extra logs out of the client-side /var/log/syslog doesn't work for me on Ubuntu 12.04. Probably a PEBKAC, but I wonder if this is a known challenge?

comment Prevent APT from overwriting custom files
How silly. I guess I'll go learn about diversions and if no one reports back with a better solution, I'll document the details of how I use a diversion for this here.

comment Can upstart handle symbolic links to config files?
Lame. Indeed symlinks are ignored without a manual call to reload config. Sigh. I prefer symlinks. Cleaner in my use-case. Oh well. I'll just copy the files in, like jerk.

comment How can I increase ssh security? Can I require both a key and password?
I also use the DenyHosts application to help lock out people who keep trying to get in, and failing. A nice little pro-active automated way of blacklisting people..

@JdeBP Okay, cool, just thought I'd throw that out there. Just in case a simple answer like that had been overlooked. Thanks!

comment Unable to set up SSL support for Apache 2 on Debian
I think djangofan's correct here.. My Apache server's all have two different ssl certificate files, three in some cases, that must be referenced in the config.. The third applies when it's a for-real ssl cert, not a self-signed one..

With respect to your weird formatting issue - maybe you need to manually declare what character encoding your input you're mailing uses...?

Looks fine at a glance. What error message do you get when you try to run with this config?

comment Ubuntu server (VM) with two interfaces. Can only pass traffic on one or the other interface at a time
This sounds like a problem I've had before. Never really figured it out, though I think in my case it was a hardware limitation. I think I solved it for me by adding a physical nic to the virtual host and using that for the VMs. What is your host platform? ESX?
