comment Web server not available on Debian virtual machine
And yes, you cannot ping port, so "could not find host 192.168.1.222:80" would be forever - because there is no such host. Try to open it in browser ot telnet 192.168.1.222 80 from cmd.exe

Check if httpd is listening port 80: ss -nal | grep 80 or netstat -atnl | grep 80. And also check firewall: iptables -n -L -v

If you have PHP-shell, you can check everything remotely. Anyway, commands gonna be the same on the phys. console. Firstly, make sure sshd is installed: yum list installed openssh-server. If so, make sure it is running: service sshd status, if it's not running - sudo service sshd start. Also make chkconfig sshd on to have SSH daemon running across reboots. If it is running and listening port 22 (netstat -atnl), it maybe the firewall who doesn't let packets reach port 22. Then check iptables rules.

Yeah. Exactly. Seems to be an Ubuntu-specific question.

Strange. On my testing CentOS box deleting without netmask was successful. Though deleting with /24 also affected only one address. What distro are you using?

Try without netmask at all: ip addr del 1.1.1.2 dev eth2
