I just found this bug report: Debian Bug report logs - #687378. It appears udev is supposed to create meaningful links for every drive that can be used for the purpose described above, but currently doesn't. So once this issue is resolved, grabbing the links from /dev/disk/by-path should be the way to go.

could you elaborate on that? All I found there so far was the scsi id (also shown by lshw), which unfortunately is not persistent. SAS-id is also present, but not related to the path...
