You hit it on the head. Latency is killer, and even the idea that software is touching packets makes brctl a non-feasible solution. A switch monitor port is plan B. But it would be ideal to have something inside the box.

This is low-end hardware, so I was hoping to avoid brctl -- I'm familiar enough with that. When you say they're "tough to find", do they exist in the wild?
