comment Long running VMWare snapshots are bad… but what about VMDKs on a ZFS\LVM snapshot?
It is kind of a given that you can't have a storage solution without using the resource of a storage solution.

comment Is my new gTLD causing it to get filtered as spam?
@womble none of those are directly used for advertising. All non tech people will understand is that email doesn't work for those domains.

comment Is my new gTLD causing it to get filtered as spam?
Given that .anything domains have been unleashed and rapidly being taken up by large established brands, this heavyweight backing is going to encourage mail server software/service providers/validators to get their houses in order quite quickly.

comment How to discourage a hacker with root access from deleting remote backups?
Do your pruning from somewhere else that only has access to your backups but not your main site.

comment What will happen if I install a 2-processor-licence on a 4-processor server with ESXi 5.5U2?
When there were memory limits ESXi didn't ignore the extra, it just refused to start at all. So my guess is nothing sensible. :)

dns domain suffix on the client. I think if you ping randomdomain123.blah. with the trailing dot then you will get the expected behavior

comment Dell PowerVault MD3000 2TB partition size limit
The MD3000 still has built in RAID controllers which need updating in addition to the HBA card in the server. Its the MD1000 which is just an enclosure. As you say the MD3000i has built in RAID controllers and an iscsi interface to the server.

comment Ubuntu VS Windows partitioning, 2TB limit
Its not very sensible to put your OS boot partitions on a massive data drive. Keeping them seperated will likely save you hassle down the line.

comment Virtualized Storage for other VMs on ESXi host
@VM_Storage_Inception if you use iscsi not honouring sync writes you can suffer data loss, honouring them you get the same latency issue as with nfs. Its just a different default. There is no free lunch.

comment Virtualized Storage for other VMs on ESXi host
Generally you would map the raw disks to the storage VM and reshare it rather than have them sitting on vmfs. Are you aware of the sync write issues of using NFS, this requires SSDs/flashram products for the writelog to give any decent performance.

ZFS is well established, several leading mainstream san products are based on it. That doesn't mean that a haphazard installation of it will be fine. Also ZFS snapshots are not a copy, you need to be doing replication too.

comment Is there a way to force a TRIM in a Windows 2012 Software RAID array?
@EricGrange No GC does not need idles times, SSDs are not confined to doing one operation at a time. How much free space are you maintaining on these drives? I've only seen performance impacted on drives that are close to full.

@EricGrange on the contrary, modern GC and overprovisioning have dramatically reduced the advantage of using TRIM.
