comment Mismatch between selected .NET version in drop-down and what's displayed below
Thank you. @Falcon Momot's answer actually fixed us, so I didn't even have a chance to try your suggestions, but I do appreciate the effort.

Thank you! I'm not sure that this will help either, but it's something I hadn't considered and is good to know.

comment What happens to running applications of .net 3.0 while upgrade happens to .net 4.0?
It depends on if someone visits a page in a .NET 2.0 - 3.5 website and a .NET4.0 website while they are running in the same application pool. If that happens, all applications will crash and you'll get event log entries explaining why.

I thought I had it - I restored the IIS Metabase to the original install date, and the errors went away - until I got the SSL Cert installed. Then I started getting errors again.

I hadn't until you posted them, but nothing in those applies. The permissions are set properly. (I checked, which is why it took so long to reply.)

@David George - I suppose it's possible, but we have never had errors in any of the ASP.NET web apps on the server. This error has been coming up for a few years, and as I've said until today it's only been a minor annoyance. Other than this error, these servers give us no issues at all.

Yes, it does. Uninstalling and reinstalling IIS doesn't work either.

It was only an annoyance to me as well, up until today. I got it after attempting to set IP restrictions on a web app, and now NOTHING can access it, and any attempt to save the restrictions results in the error. - but thanks for commenting.

comment Can't Access Database when Logged in As SA
If you're logged in as sa and running it, then no you can't. Take a look at the last two words in your error. You can't provide permissions to yourself. That said, I modified my answer because I did think of a coupole of non-permissions possibilities, but I still think this should be on ServerFault.com.

This is most certainly not a coding issue, and instead, a setting, permissions, or configuration issue. As such, this should be posted on Serverfault.com instead of StackOverflow.

I'll give you a +1 for accuracy, even though it didn't answer the question.

comment Which type of certificate for encrypting SQL Server?
For example, I know that Thawte sells SSL Certs for providing SSL on a web server, and also code signing certs. I also found a type for securing your email, which is a different type: thawte.com/resources/personal-email-certificates/…. Is there another type for securing a SQL Server, etc?

@Remus Rusanu... Thank you, You assume right, and the link you posted is where we got our information from. My question wasn't as clear as I needed it to be, I guess. In your bulleted list, we are going with option 2. My question, specifically, is "Is there a special type of certificate used for this application, or do we just use a standard SSL certificate, such as we would use for a web server?
