comment LDAP: backup with slapcat vs ldapsearch
slapcat returns entries in database (backend) order, which may or may not be well-defined. ldapsearch by default returns in the order the server replies, with OpenLDAP there is the choice of client-side sort (e.g. -S "") or server-side sort control (e.g. -E sss, if supported, and subject to some minor config & schema related bear traps). The spec says the search results may be in any order. An implementation could define a default order, most people assume the default is "parent before child", only OpenDS documents this, AFAIK.

comment How to best monitor/log problems on eth0?
Try mii-tool --watch eth0, maybe add --log to syslog instead and run it in the background. Check if the NIC driver supports a debug flag that you can load it with: confirm the driver with basename $(readlink /sys/class/net/eth0/device/driver/module), then inspect modinfo /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/d rivers/net/$DRIVER.ko for the supported parms.

comment custom ldap conf for apache 2.2
The places that are searched are a property of the LDAP library in use, and are largely independent of Apache (only the www/httpd user home directory has an effect). The file names and directories are very well documented in the ldap.conf man page. If none of the default locations suit, you may be able to modify Apache's envvars script to set and export one of the LDAPxxx environment variables instead.
