comment Why would a public subnet be used here?
One problem I have seen in the instance of using public IP's instead of NAT on a DSL line is that communication to the servers from the internal network can be limited to whatever speed DSL service you subscribe to (768k for example). That can be highly detrimental to performance.

Which, oddly, anti-virus software would be of no help for.

comment RV042. Public IP on LAN port. Is it possible?
You could also use NAT or port-forwarding if you don't want to expose the whole machine to the internet, or still maintain the ability to connect to that machine on your local network.

comment Monitor traffic on ports with Cacti
You could use nethogs to measure bandwidth per process. It would be tricky to then pull that data via SNMP into cacti for graphing. cyberciti.biz/faq/…

comment Determine if IPs are backed by VPS
The MAC address isn't going to leave the switch the servers are plugged into, so that won't help you on the Internet.

comment How to meassure disk access
You would want to run it during a time when as few systems as possible will be accessing the storage array, or else you won't get consistent numbers. Be warned that some caching systems in the storage array or your virtualization hypervisor can cause irregular results as well.

Can you post the script? Does the memory usage go up throughout the lifetime of the script? Guessing it's a nasty memory leak.

comment Low Upload Bandwidth Issues
First thing I would check is to disable auto-negotiation on your switch ports that connect to your ISP provided router/modem. Set them to 100mbs full. Also, what are you using to test bandwidth? A single file transfer or multiple transfers from many address (such as a torrent)
