comment How do I migrate a database between servers from SQL 2008 Std to SQL 2014 Std using T-SQL without losing data?
Can you post the query you used to compare the max IDs? Also, are the row counts of your main table different too?

comment Unable to connect to SQL Server on live server
Regarding your edit- just to clarify: SSMS is installed on the online server and it cannot connect to the SQL Server instance running on the same server? (I'm getting thrown off by the word "remotely".)

Yep, that sounds exactly like the problem I'm having. Which version of Outlook are you using?

comment Is there a safe way to cancel updates during windows shutdown
When faced with the option of missing the last express train home or leaving your computer on all night, always choose the latter.

comment SQL Server: Worse performance on a new server
Are you sure about this statement: "If there are any missing indexes (I don't think there are) they affect the old and new servers equally." I would start with the assumption that some of the indexes did not transfer with the restore, and take steps to make sure all of the indexes present in the source DB are actually present in the target DB too.

I disagree that historical data is needed to investigate. If historical data supported his theory, how would that help the investigation, except that you know you need to investigate?

comment What MS SQL Server administrator client should I use?
I guess when the OP commented: "The ssms version is the most recent. I downloaded it today.", he must have meant he downloaded the most recent version of SSMS 2005.

How long does the problem last if you don't do a reboot? Or does it never go away unless you reboot?

comment Trusted Connection to SQL fails after connecting to a VPN
Ok, in that case, the vpn domain is taking precedent for some reason. I don't know if there's a way when you're logged into both to specify the precedent domain. Since you said you setup trusts, can you give your user in the vpn domain permission to sql server the same way your normal user has? That way you wouldn't have to use the runas /netonly command when vpn'd in.
