comment DDNS entry being replaced to the actual IP on an iptables chain
womble is correct. if you view the chain using iptables -Lnv ACCEPT_PERSONAL you will see that the rules reference the IP, not the hostname. You can schedule a cronjob to replace the rules on a semi-regular basis, which would "freshen" the IP fairly well.

comment How to browse safely from a public internet computer?
minor point: https will not protect you from a proxy server that does active "man in the middle" style SSL hijacking. the browser's trusted certificate store will have a cert that has been injected to allow the proxy to pretend to be anything it wants to be. end-to-end encryption doesn't work if your endpoint is compromised, either by malice or by enterprise policy. :-)

comment Linux box time dilation
is this system running under any kind of virtualization, such as xen or vmware? that can greatly affect what time/clock issues you experience, and the best solutions.

comment VMware Server 2.0 in Linux loads a blank screen at the login page
yes, clearing the browser cache usually fixes it for me, but i've had to resort to the other steps on more than one occasion also. amusingly, on preview i scanned to make sure i led with that solution, and mis-read baumgart's answer as the start of my own. ;-)

comment /etc/cron.daily/apt and /etc/cron.daily/aptitude on ubuntu hardy
if "apt-config shell UnattendedUpgradeInterval APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade" returns no output, then the /etc/cron.daily/apt script will use its internally specified default value for that variable, which is 0, meaning no unattended upgrades should be initiated by that script.

comment Virtualbox guest additions security issues
could you narrow the focus of your question a bit? are you concerned about creating a risk to the guest from the host? a risk to the guest from other hosts? a risk to the host from the guest? something else?
