comment Multiple SSL vhosts using wildcard certificate in nginx
Thanks for this, I needed ssl on the listen directive for this to work with a 1.4.x nginx. My listen directives in the vhosts also had to be literally the same (logical equivalence was not sufficient).

Sorry, I am relatively new to the Joyent platform so my terminology may not be 100% correct. I am using one of their SmartMachine images, which I understood to be SmartOS running in a zone. E.g. the intent there is that those images were ready to be configured and used for apps, not additional zones. Per: wiki.joyent.com/wiki/display/jpc2/SmartMachine+Images

The check program only will return 0 if the underlying daemon is properly doing its job. In some cases a restart doesn't always fix the problem, so my goal here was to implement a rough back-off policy. I suspect what I will need to do instead is have my check program look at additional info and run less frequently (perhaps every 6 cycles), giving the daemon more time to fully boot and return to proper operation.

Thanks, this helps a lot with what was perhaps my core misunderstand - that the condition for "2 cycles" is not "on the second cycle". Is there a way to achieve what I was hoping for?

'vol_id' has since been renamed 'blkid', for anyone who happens to stumble upon this great answer.
